When you happen to be in Michigan, Al-Bo's is a great break from being in Michigan. It's like a quick side trip to Northern Central Europe. From the Austrian wienerschnitzel to the Bosnian cevapi, you know you're not near the Great Lakes. The cevapi was excellent, bringing back good memories of being in Mostar, and while I expected some coffee like what we call Turkish, or Greek, or Macedonian the proffered espresso-based drinks were pretty fabulous. The service is friendly, knowledgeable, and served with a side of good humor. Execution and delivery of food is pretty darn quick. The restaurant itself is clean, tidy, and perhaps a little more bare bones than I expected. That doesn't take anything away from the joy of just chilling somewhere in Europe between my chores in Michigan.

f you're anywhere near the Grand Rapids airport and you want a real meal, skip the chains and get yourself to Al-Bo's. This family-owned Bosnian and Albanian kitchen has been running since 2003, and every dish that comes out of it tastes like it. I started with the burek -- homemade phyllo stuffed with ground beef and sauteed onions -- and it was everything a good pastry should be: crisp outside, savory and rich inside. Then I ordered the veal schnitzel with spaetzl instead of fries. That was the right call. The meat was pounded thin, breaded perfectly, and fried to a golden crust without being greasy. The spaetzl was buttery and tender. I ate every bite and I'm not sorry about it. The menu covers a wide swath of Eastern Europe -- schnitzels, sarma, cevapi, goulash, begova corba, baklava, crepes -- and everything is made from scratch. No frozen ingredients, no shortcuts. The prices are reasonable, the portions are generous, and the staff treated us well. This is the kind of place that reminds you why a family recipe beats a corporate kitchen every time. If you're in Grand Rapids and you've never been, fix that. 5 out of 5.
